How the price is calculated

  1. Gold value = weight × price per gram (for 24K: the 18K price × 1000 ÷ 750)
  2. Labour fee = gold value × labour %
  3. Seller's profit = (gold value + labour fee) × profit %
  4. VAT = (labour fee + profit) × VAT %
  5. Final price = gold value + labour fee + profit + VAT

VAT is charged on the labour fee and the profit only, not on the gold itself.

FAQ

How is the price of gold jewellery calculated?
The weight is multiplied by the price of one gram of 18K gold. The labour fee is a percentage of that amount, the seller's profit is a percentage of gold plus labour, and VAT is charged on the labour fee and profit only. The sum of the four is what you pay at the counter.
Is VAT charged on the whole price of gold?
No. VAT applies only to the labour fee and the seller's profit, not to the value of the gold. That is why a piece with a low labour fee also carries less tax.
What is a normal labour fee for gold?
There is no fixed rate: plain machine-made pieces carry a low labour fee and fine handmade work a higher one. The calculator's default is only a starting point; ask the seller for their percentage and enter it in the form.
Where does the price per gram come from?
The base is the live free-market price of one gram of 18K gold, refreshed every few minutes. For 24K gold the same price is multiplied by 1000 and divided by 750.
Do I get the same amount back when I sell?
No. When you sell, usually only the value of the gold is paid; the labour fee, profit and VAT are not returned. Low-labour pieces are therefore the better choice for saving.
